At the 2016 Clinton Global Initiative in February, Clinton suggested that Syrian refugees could be brought to Detroit to help rebuild the city, calling it an “enormous opportunity for Americans.”
“Detroit has 10,000 empty, structurally sound houses — 10,000,” Clinton said. “And lot of jobs are to be had repairing those houses. Detroit just came out of bankruptcy and the mayor’s trying to do an innovative sort of urban homesteading program there. But it just gives you an example of what could be done. And I think any of us who have ever had any personal experience with either Syrian Americans or Syrian refugees think it’s a pretty good deal.”
If your first thought is, well – he has a point; stop for a second. Unemployment rates for black Americans are twice the national average at around 11%. The unemployment rate for blacks in Detroit is estimated to be 20% or higher. Worse, is the unemployment rate for black youths; estimated at 51% nationally.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Bill Clinton’s pontification favors migrants over the American worker. Detroit’s problem isn’t a lack of job seeking Americans; the problem is a shortage of skilled workers. Perhaps Bill will change his mind and consider investing in the American worker so they can fill the job vacancies in Detroit. I think that’s “a pretty good deal.”
