The Legislative Assembly of Mexico City passed a non-binding resolution yesterday declaring Donald Trump “morally a persona non grata”, meaning an unacceptable, unwelcome person.
The resolution came just hours ahead of Trump’s visit with President Enrique Peña Nieto, who extended an invitation to Hillary Clinton, then felt it necessary to also invite Trump. Well, Clinton declined but Trump accepted and headed right now.
Mexico City’s legislature called for Peña Nieto to demand a public apology from Trump. In 2015, Trump made a speech that said some of the migrants coming to America were rapists and criminals. Subsequently, Trump has also said that, if elected, he will build a wall between Mexico and the U.S.
Trump is widely reviled in Mexico. A poll conducted in June by Mexico’s El Financiero showed that only 2 percent of Mexicans viewed Trump favorably.
For their part, neither Mexico City nor the Mexican Federal Government has proposed a solution to the 11 million illegal aliens in the US or the millions who continue to cross the border. In fact, in 2005, the Mexican government began publishing a pamphlet that instructs migrants how to safely enter the United States illegally and live there without being detected.
According to a stunning Fusion investigation, 80 percent of women and girls crossing into the U.S. by way of Mexico are raped during their journey. That’s up from a previous estimate of 60 percent, according to an Amnesty International report. The assaults are so common that many women and girls take contraceptives beforehand as preventative measures.
Although poorly received, Trump’s comments do come from a place of pure fact. While they represent just 3.5% of the U.S. population, undocumented immigrants represented 7% of federal prison sentences following convictions on charges of sexual abuse, 9% of murders, 12% of assaults and 30% of kidnappings in 2013.
